Sweet basil is a tender annual herb with dark green,
pointed oval leaves that may or may not be fuzzy. It bears coils
or spirals of green, white, or pink flowers.
The Latin name for basil is Ocimum Basilicum.
Basil releases a fresh, sweet herbaceous scent.
Steam-distilling the flowering herb produces an oil that can be
either colourless, pale yellow or pale green. It has a light spicy
scent, with a balsamic or camphor like undertone.
It is native to tropical Asia and Africa. It is
the member of the Lamiaceae family, and cultivated throughout Europe,
in the Mediterranean, islands in the Pacific. North and South America,
Brazil, Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Hungary, Indonesia, Italy, Morocco,
South Africa and the United States all produce basil.
